His Name is Mighty God & Everlasting Father
For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 (NKJV)
In a previously written devotional about the name of Jesus titled, Whats in a name? we broke down the meaning of the Lord Jesus Christ. We learned that:
1. Lord is His title. When we use the term Lord, it signifies a relationship with him as it says that we are submitting to Him as the Lord of our life.
But why do you call Me Lord, Lord, and not do the things which I say? Luke 6:46 (NKJV)
2. Jesus Is His name. This name is a Greek translation of the Hebrew name Yeshua (Yaw-Shoe-Ah), which means Jehovah is salvation. So we know He is the way to being saved.
Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:6 (NKJV)
3. Christ, This word speaks of Jesus mission here on earth because He is the Savior of everyone who accepts Him (See Acts 4:10-12).
But as we look into the writings of the prophet Isaiah, we see there is much more to our Lord and Savior Jesus.
The first part of the verse of Isaiah 9:6 prophesizes of Jesus earthly birth, For unto us a Child is born.
Next we see His divine origin, Unto us a Son is given, because He was deity from Heaven, and He was God, the Son.
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins. 1John 4:10 (NKJV)
Next we see the future of Jesus ministry, And the government will be upon His shoulder. This will happen when He comes back and reigns in His second coming. It will be a thousand-year period, known as the millennial period. And it starts directly after the Great Tribulation, also referred to as the 7-years of trials and tribulations. Whats cool about this is we will be reigning with Him (See Rev 20:6).
Isaiah finishes the verse as he goes on to tell us what Jesus will be called: Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Jesus is truly wonderful, and His counsel is like no other found on earth. People can and do pay thousands of dollars, and countless hours for psychological counseling, and still they will not be given a true peace, or the liberating truth that frees them from the bondage of sin, fear, anxiety and doubt. Still, many more can be given good Biblical Christian counseling and have this truth given to them, but even those counselors cant help them do it like Jesus can.
Jesus is also called Mighty God, and Everlasting Father. Thats right! The child, who was born of flesh, who is also the Son given to us, is, in fact, The Mighty God and Everlasting Father. Oh, how this contradicts man made religions. You see, Jesus was there in the beginning before creation was being formed. He was the Word, and He was fully God.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 (NKJV)
Jesus will reign soon, and we Christians will reign with Him. When this happens, there will be an everlasting peace throughout the world. The wolf will live with the lamb, the leopard will lie down with the goat, the calf and the lion and the yearling together; and a little child will lead them. The cow will feed with the bear, their young will lie down together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox. The infant will play near the hole of the cobra, and the young child put his hand into the vipers nest. They will neither harm nor destroy.
Dont ever let anyone ever tell you there is another way to God, except through Jesus. God became man to die for mans sin, so that man might have a relationship with God. There are many names for Jesus, and each one describes something He has, or is doing for us so that we might know and spend time with Him for eternity. What a wonderful counselor! What a mighty God! What a friend we have in Jesus.
STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn about Jesus from the Scriptures above?
PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you have a relationship with Jesus?
APPLICATION: Seek Gods forgiveness, mercy and grace by simply asking Jesus into your heart. He will help you, but you have to let Him.
