For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, Romans 1:18-20 (NKJV)
We have been looking at a devotional series on God, and in the first 2-parts we looked at some of God's creations. We looked at the intricacies and the absolute perfect details that clearly show that God exists. In the third part, we looked at the two ways that God reveals Himself to mankind. The first way is through General Revelation, which included all those things within the universe that were created. The second way is through Spiritual Revelation, which includes God's written Word--The Bible.
In Part IV, we will take a look at God's Divine Attributes and Characteristics. Lets start by looking at His Divine Attributes. The first thing we need to know is that by calling these attributes "Divine" we are saying that these can only be attributable to God.
5-Divine Attributes of God
1. He is Eternal: This means He has no beginning, and no end.
2. He is Immutable: This means that He is not susceptible to any alteration or change.
3. He is Omnipresent: This means He is present everywhere with His whole being at the same time.
4. He is Omniscient: This means He has complete and universal knowledge of all things past, present, and future.
5. He is Omnipotent: This means God can do anything that can be done (Cannot contradict His own nature). (#1)
It is impossible to compile and list all of the characteristics of God. First of all, we don't know all of them, because it is beyond us, and secondly, it is because they are infinite in number. So let's take a look at 5 of them.
5-Divine Characteristics of God
1. God's Holiness: This means moral and ethical wholeness or perfection; freedom from moral evil. Holiness is one of the essential elements of Gods nature required of His people. Holiness may also be rendered "Sanctification" or "Godliness." The word, "Holy" denotes that which is "Sanctified," or "Set apart" for divine service.
2. God's Righteousness: The word "Righteous" comes from a root word that means "Straightness." It refers to a state that conforms to an authoritative standard. Righteousness is a moral concept. God's character is the definition and source of all righteousness (See Gen 18:25; Deut. 32:4; Rom. 9:14). Therefore, mans righteousness is defined in terms of Gods righteousness.
3. God's Love: Love is not only one of God's attributes; it is also an essential part of His nature. "God is love", the Bible declares (1 John 4:8, 16)the personification of perfect love. Such love surpasses our powers of understanding (Eph. 3:19). Love like this is everlasting (Jer. 31:3), free (Hos. 14:4), sacrificial (John 3:16), and enduring to the end (John 13:1).
4. God's Mercy: The aspect of God's love that causes him to help the miserable, just as grace is the aspect of His love that moves Him to forgive the guilty. Those who are miserable may be so either because of breaking God's law or because of circumstances beyond their control. God shows mercy by actively helping those who are miserable due to circumstances beyond their control. We see this aspect of mercy especially in the life of our Lord Jesus. He healed blind men (Matt. 9:27-31; 20:29-34) and lepers (Luke 17:11-19). These acts of healing grew out of His attitude of compassion and mercy.
5. God's Grace: Favor or kindness shown without regard to the worth of merit of the one who receives it and in spite of what that same person deserves. Grace is on of the key attributes of God. The Lord God is "merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abounding in goodness and truth" (Exodus 34:6). Therefore, grace is almost always associated with mercy, love, compassion, and patience as the source of help and deliverance from distress. (#1)
Hey Christian, take some time to look over these 5-attributes, and 5-characteristics of God. We need to know these things to fully understand why He is capable of helping us and meeting our needs no matter where we are at and at any time. We can also see why He would want to do these things for us.
STUDY QUESTION: Why is it so important to know about God's divine attributes and characteristics?
PERSONAL INVENTORY: Would you be willing to share these characteristics and attributes with others so that they might know about God better?
APPLICATION: Take time to memorize these things so that you can always know and share about God to those who don't know.
