“BUT ONE THING IS NEEDFUL…”

(Luke 10: 38- 42)38- “Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. 39- And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. 40- But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41- And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42- But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.” The issue of differences is very obvious in our text. There are 2 different personalities, 2 different priorities and 2 different plans of 2 different people as recorded here. Although Martha and Mary were sisters, its shows by the way they treated Jesus that as 2 different people, they have different attitudes and characters. Their values, their visions in life and their views of things and people were different. We have 4 children and we treat them differently and we deal with them in a different level. And the reasons for their differences were the same reasons as that of Mary and Martha… Martha was very caring while Mary was very attentive. Martha was so anxious of the physical things while Mary was more interested in spiritual things. Martha was active while Mary was more relaxed. Mary was more courteous while Martha was very commanding and straight forward. Mary and Martha actually represent the kinds of people that we witnessed from age to age. They are the picture of this present age Christians. We can see them in our homes and churches today. You can see yourself, your parents and siblings by their actions and by the way they conduct themselves in the presence of our Lord. Check out what Jesus said about the kind of person you could be just by looking at your fruits: (Matthew 7:15- 20) 15- “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16- Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17- Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18- A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19- Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20- Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.”
