What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31 (NKJV)
Have you ever felt like it was you against the world? Perhaps you felt like you didnt have enough help to take on whatever it was you were tackling. Im sure that weve all felt that at one point or another. But the Scriptures tell us differently. Imagine God being on your side. Could you imagine playing dodge ball with Him on your side?
But that is what we are basically being told here. Hey, if God is for us, who in their right mind can be against us? Theres only one really, and hes not in his right mind. Its the devil. He is the one who is against us. And not just us Christians either, but everyone! He doesnt have to work too hard on those who deny God, because he already has them right where he wants them. But us? Thats a different story.
But we dont have to worry about that, because Satan is not Gods counterpart as many think. He is but a fallen angel, and his equivalent is perhaps the Angel Michael or maybe Gabriel, and he is no match for God.
And we need to know, God doesnt leave us walking around aimlessly lost, not knowing where to go, and with no help. He doesnt leave us as abandoned children fending for ourselves either. Jesus told us that we would be taken care of, and that He would ask God to give us some help as well.
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; John 14:16 (KJV)
The word comforter in the Greek is parakletos and it means an intercessor; consoler. And were told in Romans 8:16 that the Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that as Christians, we are in fact, Gods children. So we can think of God as a concerned parent. And we should also know, He never designed us to separated from His love for us.
Q: So why do we feel at times as if we are a victim? Why do we spend so much time preoccupied with those who are attacking us or are against us? Why do we go around murmuring, freaking out or complaining to others about our predicament?
Well, its probably because we feel as if we are the only ones who can properly defend ourselves. We get nervous about being thought of in a negative way. And if no one else is going to step up, then we feel as if we should take that role. But thats not what the Word of God says for us to do. Were to place our trust in God and allow Him to defend us, because that is what He does.
But let all those rejoice who put their trust in You; Let them ever shout for joy, because You defend them; Psalms 5:11 (NKJV)
Look, Satan and his followers can make a powerful alliance, but they are no match for God! We need to understand this verse in Romans 8:31 is literally telling us, Since God is for us, who can be against us?
It doesnt matter if youve lived a perfect life; thats not what will determine whether God steps in and helps you in your battles or not. God loves you tremendously! So much so, that He gave His Son to die for you. He allowed Him to bleed for you to cover up your sin. If youve made that commitment to Him and placed your faith in Him, then you need to know that youve been declared righteous, and youre being sanctified as we speak.
You are a trophy of Gods grace; His unmerited favor. You didnt earn it, and you cant do anything to cause Him to love you more. He already loves you and has proven this love by sacrificing something very dear to Him. I think that alone shows that He is on your side.
What a feeling of relief knowing we have the God of the universe on our side, and there is now no reason to doubt, to be anxious or to fear anything.
Lets walk with a purpose today! Lets ask the Lord what He would have us do with our life. Lets walk with the confidence of knowing God is for us, and we need not fear.
STUDY QUESTION: According to John 14:16, why should we be confident in Gods help?
PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to acknowledge that you have God on your side today?
APPLICATION: We need to remember each time we face tremendous challenges and trials of sorts, that if we love God and we desire to walk in obedience, then He is on our side, and will defend us.
